Healing Images for Children: Teaching Relaxation and Guided Imagery to Children Facing Cancer and Other Serious Illnesses
Published in Paperback by Inner Coaching (01 June, 2001)
Authors: Nancy C. Klein and Matthew Holden
Average review score:

Essential for Child Psychotherapists & School Psychologists
Nancy Klein clearly applies the best that trance and metaphor have to offer in assisting children and families confronted by cancer. Her unpretentious and direct self-instruction book serves as essential reading for any psychotherapist who wants to learn how to apply trance and metaphor as psychotherapy tools in life-threatening situations. Just as Milton E. Erickson's medical condition fueled his way of healing others, so also, Nancy Klein's medical history fuels her way of healing children and families. School Psychologists and Psychotherapists supporting children confronting serious medical conditions will value this book.

I'm Telling Everyone . . .
As a pediatric RN at a midwestern children's hospital, I interact daily with children and families dealing with serious on-going illnesses. So, of course I was keenly interested in checking out Nancy Klein's "Healing Images..." resources. I now own my own set (book, CD, workbook) and am excited to have this opportunity to share my fierce passion for these materials!
When the onset of serious illness feels like an all-out attack on a child and his or her loved ones, Nancy Klein's book and related materials provide the effective counterattack armament to be used in conjunction with the medical treatment battle plan.
Here's a book built from profound compassion and filled with solid substance. Nancy's words and metaphor-stories are dynamically encouraging and soothingly nurturing for the ill child as well as their often overwhelmed family members and friends.
Aside from the goal of enhancing healing, this guide aims to imbue the healing journey with calmness, courage, and confidence. Ms. Klein hits the mark. The wonderful illlustrations by Matt Holden aptly support the cause.
This is an awesome resource for children, families, health care providers, and anyone who cares about someone with a serious illness! I'm telling everyone I can about this great book and the adjunct activity book and CD. I've personally purchased sets for several families in my community. Most of you, too, know of at least one family in the midst of a medical crisis. You may have been wondering what you can do. Know that such a child and family would desperately welcome and appreciate the huge heartfelt help that these materials deliver.
P.S. I love the stories! My favorites right now are "Soccer Victory," "A Turtle," and "Remote Control." Which are yours?

Invaluable - has improved quality of life
I can't recommend this book highly enough - well written, common sense, and has made a big difference in the quality of my mom's life. I refer to this book almost daily - seems to answer all nutrition related questions re: diet and health in the context of Parkinsons Disease. A godsend.

Science Askew: A Light-hearted look at the scientific world
Published in Hardcover by Institute of Physics Pub (15 December, 2001)
Authors: D. E. Simanek and J. C. Holden
Average review score:

Delightful
If you want a good chuckle this is the book for you. One of the chapters is "Statistics is a Chancy Business" with a wonderful drawing of Wall Street, giving a historical timeline. One section gives us statistics to help us understand the real world. For example, "Did you hear about the statistician who drowned while wading in a pond with an average depth of six inches?", or "Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital".

A pleasure to read.
This book is one of those rare books that has a lot to offer, including amusing puns and deep philosophical ideas. And it is just a nice book to own. The type style and quality paper make it very attractive. Simanek's wit and Holden's illustrations complement each other nicely. The focus farm where the sons raise meat is a pun that is hard to top. The warning about Dihydrogen Monoxide(by Dan Galvin) and the Hazards of solar power(by Donald Simanek) have great pedagogical value for one and all. As Donald and John say, the book is "An Almanac of Scientific Ephemera."
WARNING: this book is not written for the scientist only. There are no academic degrees required to enjoy and appreciate this book. A careful reading of the book is probably as rewarding as any science course you will take. In fact, as with most good writing, a good course could be built around this publication. I dare you to put it down.

The Shadow Dancer
Published in Hardcover by Prime Crime (September, 2002)
Author: Margaret Coel
Average review score:

absorbing and interesting mystery
It has been four months since lawyer Vicky Holden left her high-powered job in a high profile legal firm to return home to the Wind River Reservation. She finally agrees to face her abusive ex-husband Ben at a local restaurant but they aren't together a few minutes before he loses his temper, makes a scene, and walks out.

A mortified Vicky departs from her public humiliation not long after the incident occurred only to later learn that Ben was murdered. The local FBI agent knows that Vicki had motive and opportunity, but no alibi. The gun is wiped clear of finger points except for a clear one that belongs to Vicki. Unless Vickie can find the real killer, she will be indicted for premeditated murder.

Margaret Coel has written an absorbing and interesting mystery that gives readers a glimpse into the modern day west. The protagonist is a feisty determined woman and her friend catholic priest Father O' Malley is her mirror image. Together this unlikely pair gets in and out of trouble so many times it feels as if they are stars in a Wild West epic.

Harriet Klausner

A unique mystery
There are many mystery series out today that feature crime-solvers ranging from cooks to cats. Most are good, light reading with interesting twists and turns.
But if you are interested in a more serious and unique line of mysteries, look to Margaret Coel's Arapahoe series. Set on the Wind River Reservation in Wyoming, Coel's cast of characters include Jesuit priest Father John O'Malley and his friend Vicky Holden, who is an Arapahoe attorney from Denver. These two always manage to stumble upon unusual circumstances that need following up on, including murders, disappearances and mayhem.
Her latest book, "The Shadow Dancer," is the seventh in this group, and this time a charismatic leader of the Ghost Dancers is wreaking havoc on the reservation, with people near and dear to Father John and Vicky turning up missing and dead.
Dean Little Horse, a young Arapahoe with a talent for computers, is missing, and his elderly aunts have summoned Father John for help in finding him. During his inquiries about Dean, Father John discovers a man called Orlando has proclaimed himself the prophet of the Ghost Dancers, a religion promising a new world to come that swept the plains during the 1880's. Orlando is stirring up the residents of the reservation with his new group, known as the Shadow Dancers. Is this group responsible for Dean's disappearance?
Meanwhile, Vicky Holden is having troubles of her own. Her despised ex-husband has been murdered, and Vicky quickly becomes the prime suspect. She turns to Father John to help her find her husband's murderers, and it's during their search that they find evidence that the Shadow Dancers might have had a hand in this crime as well.
Coel is adept at weaving her stories with a flair for suspense that keeps her readers intrigued and enthralled. You can start at the beginning of her series or jump in with the latest, and experience a satisfying read either way. Her research into the subject matter is extensive, and she presents the historical background in her stories in a way that lends much to the tale at hand.
So if you're into mysteries and are looking for a change of pace, give Margaret Coel's Wind River Reservation series a try. You'll find them unique and original.

Seriously Under-Marketed and Under-Appreciated, A Real Value

It is always a shame when a really great book is badly marketed and consequently does not reach as many professionals and citizens as it should. This is such a book.

What the blurbs don't tell you, such as they are, is that the author was one of the true pioneers in the world of open source intelligence (creating useful actionable intelligence using only legal and ethical sources and methods). His brilliant efforts in the early 1990's were easily a decade ahead of where the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS) is today--using a wide variety of Latin American newspapers and lots of brainpower, he was able to create tactical intelligence that contributed significantly to the success of operational missions by the U.S. Southern Command and the Drug Enforcement Administration, leading the destruction of cocaine laboratories, the interdiction of aircraft, and the arrest of key people in the transnational criminal structure.

This book is an essential reference for any agency or command library concerned with asymmetric warfare, unconventional threats, and non-traditional methods of providing intelligence support to those responsible for dealing with anything other than traditional war. The sources and methods that the author discusses are especially pertinent to the study of terrorism, proliferation, transnational crime, cross-national toxic dumping, and other sub-state and non-state threats.

Sharing the Secrets
Dr. Holden-Rhodes gives you the truth about the open border between the Unites States and Mexico. He is an operational expert on Intelligence and Drug Trafficking. He is a Professor at Highlands University and is known world wide on his Strategical Intelligence gathering abilities. Dr. Holden-Rhodes is a teacher of teachers.

Successful Manager's Handbook

NOT JUST FOR MANAGERS, IT'S A HANDBOOK FOR ALL
They call it "Successful Manager's Handbook". That is correct. But one thing you should know about this beautifully structured text is that it benefits anyone who seeks knowledge from it. Thus, I would not advise you to wait until you become a 'successful manager' before paying attention to it.
Even if you are the most unsuccessful messenger around, the valuable productivity guidelines in this book would go a long way in defining and improving your status. If diligently applied, the principles of this book would enhance your overall potentials: be it official or domestic.
This book is a handbook for all. It is an asset for matured dealings.

I haven't read this book yet
I just picked up a copy in an airport bookstore. I looked at one suggestion, and used it when I got back to the office. My productivity has skyrocketed. I think a lot of the suggestions here are commonsense. But do any of us have enough commonsense?

Wake up America
I just finished reading this book this morning, and wow! For years, I've been wandering around believing, "What can I do?" Now I know that we each have unbelievable power. That we really can make a difference, and awareness is the first step. I am now more aware of how the American government works. Whether you're a Republican, Democrate, Libertarian, or any other "party" member, this book is worth reading--if only to stimulate your mind for the possibilities of a stronger nation. There really is power in one, and I am now doing my part. Thank you Fred Holden for opening my eyes and waking up one more American!

A highly recommended compendium of sound advice
In Total Power Of One In America, Fred Holden takes up where traditional education leaves off as he covers such vital contemporary issues as how best to make a living, how to live, and how to understand life. This "reader friendly", highly recommended compendium of sound advice, revealing insights, practical strategies, and motivating encouragement is unique among self-help, self-improvement guides as Holden shows how any one of us can make a genuine and discernable difference in our families, our communities, our work and our lives.

Catcher in the Rye (Barron's Book Notes)

Authors: J. D. Salinger and Joseph Claro
Average review score:

Engrossing
While wondering around the library one day, I saw this book and figured I might as well read it because it was a "classic." I am sooo glad I did. This book was wonderful. The plot was complex up until the last. The characters were very well developed. I couldn't put this one down. Just a warning though, this book has a quite a bit of bad language in it, but the story is still absolutly magnificent. A "must read"

The Catcher in the Rye--Innocence Under Pressure
Published in Hardcover by Twayne Pub (June, 1993)
Author: Sanford Pinsker
Average review score:

if you want to know why this is great you will have to read
this is an amazing anti-depressant. on the one hand it is the story of this really sad and depressed guy with a warped attitude in life, yet it is his innocence masked by his arrogance that is so touching. it is about this simple man with simple dreams and simple frustrations...someone like any of us! it is this simplicity that is so beautifully extraordinary. well the most emotional scene is when he breaks phoebe's cassette...i almost cried. the author is so powerful when it comes to playing with words and situations that a simple cassette breaking can bring tears to one's eyes. hats off.
